Tour de Rock officially underway

Tour de Rock 2019 is here and riders are well on their way up north.

On Saturday, the tour kicked off in Victoria. Riders stopped by the Campbell River Boston Pizza for a quick lunch, before spending the rest of the day making their way up towards Port Alice.

After that, the group will ride down from Port Alice and back to Victoria, covering a total of 1, 000 kilometres. As they ride down the island, they’ll be visiting various communities to talk about what the tour means to them as well as where the funds go.

Warren Stratton is a volunteer firefighter in View Royal, a town in Greater Victoria. This is his first year being part of the actual tour, but he says he was able to help raise funds in 2004.

He grew up in Campbell River and he says that growing up, he saw the importance of helping raise funds for a good cause.

“Growing up here, it’s definitely a big part of the community and I always wanted to be a part of it and help fundraise, but now I actually have the chance,” Stratton said.

“To be involved, it’s such a great cause. If you actually get involved, you’ll just fall in love with it. The people are amazing. The community and the family, it’s great.”

The 2019 team will be riding down to Campbell River on September 24th. They’ll be at the Tyee Chevrolet around 12:30 pm. They will be visiting several schools in the city, capping the day off with a fundraiser even at Painter’s Lodge and a mix and mingle event at Boston Pizza.

Funds raised go to the Canadian Cancer Society for pediatric cancer research. Some of the money also goes to support programs like Camp Goodtimes, which allows kids sick with cancer to have camp experiences in a medically-supervised and safe environment.
