The Strathcona Regional District has been awarded some funding from the Union of BC Municipalities.
It’s to help the district develop Community Wildfire Protection Plans for various communities in the region. The plans will help the SRD’s efforts to reduce wildfire by identifying the risks of wildland/urban interface fires within and surrounding the region.
The $175, 000 in funding will also be used to improve aerial imaging and update community wildfire protection plans in Sayward Valley, the Village of GoldRiver, Tahsis and Zeballos and adjacent areas, Nuchalaht, Kyuquot and Checleset and adjacent areas, and Read Island.
“The Community Wildfire Protection Plan is a crucial step in better preparing homeowners and communities to reduce the risk of loss,” Strathcona Regional District Chair Michele Babchuk said.
“The plans will describe the consequences of a wildfire and examine the possible ways to reduce risk by making recommendations to lessen wildfire threats and impacts to our region.”
Part of developing the plans will be mapping the areas out using aerial surveillance, as well as working with Fire Chiefs, Emergency Coordinators, Chief Administrative Officers, planning departments and the Surge Narrows Forest Advisory Committee.
