SD72 student enrolment less than projected

School District 72 is seeing lower than projected student enrollment numbers.

At the school board’s Tuesday meeting, Secretary-Treasurer Kevin Patrick shared the findings with the board.

He said 5,575 students were projected to be enrolled in classes for the 2019-2020 school year.

Instead, the actual amount of students was 5,479 as of September 30th.

That means SD72 is 96 students short of the projections.

The reduction is an issue for the district because of the enrolment projection is used in February of each year to determine staffing levels.

SD72 says when the projections are off, the district also receives less funding from the Ministry than it was expecting.

The impact of being short 96 students means an estimated reduction of $397,500 could be coming to the annual budget.

Secretary-Treasurer Patrick says a likely reason for the missed projection is that the district did not see as many students moving into the district compared to those that moved out.
