Campbell River SAR set to do ground search for missing man

Campbell River Search and Rescue is joining in the search for Kelly McLeod.

SAR members will be conducting a ground search in areas of Campbell River tomorrow.

McLeod was first reported missing on Oct. 7.

He  is described as:

  • Caucasian in his 50s
  • Black and grey unkempt hair
  • 5’5” tall with a slight build

“Search and Rescue will be covering areas Mr. Mc Leod was known to have visited regularly or camped in hopes of learning more information,” said Campbell River RCMP spokesperson, Const.  Maury Tyre.

“We ask that if members of the public come in contact with search teams that they cooperate with them to prevent contamination of areas they are searching.”

Tim Strange is the acting SAR manager for this search.

Strange said the focus will be in the North Campbelton area.

“It’s going to concentrate a lot on some of the less-used trail networks that are heading off from the ends of different roads and from different points along the highway, basically between the Tamarac (Street) bridge and the location of ABC Recycling.”

He said the last confirmed sighting of McLeod was Oct. 4 near E & B Helicopters.

“There is a person who was at the helicopter base who had seen him walking his bicycle north, going up the highway and that was basically the last confirmed sighting that we have from a reliable witness.”

Strange said the focus will be finding McLeod’s bike.

“From what we’ve been told, he didn’t really go anywhere without his bike; that was his only form of transportation and the bike hasn’t been found. So that’s the reason for searching a lot of these trails off the areas north of Campbell River.”

Last weekend, McLeod’s sister expressed her concern.

Loral McLeod says it’s unusual for her brother to disappear without communication.

“He’s pretty regular with his routine in town and everybody saw him. And then all of a sudden, he hasn’t been seen,” Loral said.

“All of his stuff is where he left it, all of his clothing, backpack. The only thing that’s missing is himself and his bike.”

Loral says there’s no way Kelly would just leave without saying something to anyone.

“The street community, they keep tabs on each other, they look out for each other. He would never leave without saying something. I don’t believe he’d do that.”

Should you have information on McLeod or his whereabouts, you are asked to call the RCMP at 250-286-6221.
