Earthquakes hit the West Coast and B.C. interior

Two earthquakes shook British Columbia late Thursday and early this morning.

But they didn’t cause any damage. The first quake came in at 4.2 and struck just south of the border in Idaho. It was felt in the Kootenay communities of Castlegar and Creston.

The second earthquake, measured at a slightly higher 6.1, happened in the ocean just off the southern tip of Haida Gwaii at approximately 6:56 a.m. It was felt on Haida Gwaii but luckily, no tsunami warnings were issued and no damage was reported.

The Haida Gwaii earthquake was near the junction of three of the Earth’s tectonic plates, where earthquakes are common. As recently as Tuesday, a 3.6 earthquake was reported in the same region.
