New regional composting facility opening in Campbell River

Campbell River will be the site for a new regional composting facility.

It will be built at the Campbell River Waste Management Centre and is expected to open in 2021.

The Comox Valley Regional District says the facility will collect composting from over 30,000 homes in Campbell River, Comox, Cumberland and Courtenay.

The Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) Board was presented with two potential locations for the project including the Campbell River Waste Management Centre and the Norm Wood Environmental Centre.

The CSWM says the Waste Management Centre was determined to be the most suitable option due to lower costs and the greatest distance from neighbouring properties.

The CSWM added that diverting organics from the waste stream will help to meet the goals of its Solid Waste Management Plan, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and extending the life of the landfill.

The public will have the opportunity to learn more about the new facility and provide input to guide its design and operations starting early next year.
