Carihi Secondary senior girls volleyball team heading to provincials

The senior girls volleyball team at Carihi Secondary School is heading back to the BC Volleyball Provincial Championships.

The Tyees wrapped up the Island Championships over the weekend and secured the top spot after they beat the Saanichton Stelly Secondary Stingers 3-1.

It’s a big win for the team who have been in the Island Championship game more than a few times in the last couple of years, with a title win in 2017 and a second-place finish last year.

Coach Jaquie Chase thinks the experience the girls have from previous years is going to help them stay competitive at provincials.

“The experience we had last year is going to really help us this year because the girls have been in front of the crowd hearing the screaming, the chanting, and the cheering so I think they’re pretty focused and ready to go,” said Chase.

Chase added the players have been working hard to get better, something she says you can notice.

“These girls have put a lot of effort into their volleyball skills. Not only with this highschool team but I think all of them have committed throughout the year to training with their club teams, in Volleyball physical education classes, and in academy classes.

“A lot of them have spent summers going to camps and they have really invested in their volleyball skills and you can tell. They’re better players this year than they were last year.”

The Tyees have had a tough season so far and it’s only going to get harder. Chase says if they stick together and want to win, they’ll be able to compete with anyone.

“We’ve had a challenging schedule so I don’t know exactly where we’re going to stack up against some of the AAA teams ranked above and/or below us. I’m pretty confident that these girls, if they focus, play hard and they have fun, they can pretty much take on anyone,” Chase added.

The BC Provincial Volleyball Championships will be in Langley from November 28th to 30th.
