FRAUD ON THE RISE IN CAMPBELL RIVER

Campbell River RCMP says residents of Campbell River continue to be victims of fraud and the number of cases is increasing.

They are reminding vehicle owners to not only lock doors but also remove credit cards, debit cards, cheque books and other valuables.

As technology improves, fraudsters are able to spoof legitimate websites and telephone numbers. A quick online search will help determine whether or not online sales or rentals may actually be too good to be true. It is likely past victims have shared their experiences.

Those on dating websites can also be targeted. Often times fraudsters build an online relationship that seems legitimate to the victim before they start asking for money.

In their weekly roundup for November 19th – 26th, RCMP said 330 files were responded to compared to 266 files over the same period in 2018. This is a 24% increased in file load over last year.
