Large tires wash up on Stories Beach

Concerns are arising over massive tires that have washed up on Stories Beach, 15 kilometres south of downtown Campbell River.

Bolted together in groups of three or four, the tires are approximately 10 feet tall.

They were first spotted several weeks ago and are believed to have broken away from a nearby breakwater, though no one has taken responsibility.

Strathcona Regional District parks and planning manager Aniko Nelson said it “appears as though the Ministry of Environment is looking into it.”

Stories Beach is located outside Campbell River’s jurisdiction. Nelson said the district is not responsible for the foreshore — the stretch of coast between low and high tide.

We have reached out to the Ministry of Environment for more information.
