Company hopes to fire up Myra Falls Mine in 6 months

After a major review of market conditions and operations at the Nyrstar Myra Falls zinc and copper mine near Campbell River, the company says they have temporarily pulled the plug on operations.

A total of 350 workers are employed at the operation, west of Campbell river.

We spoke to Glenn Smith, Acting Vice President of North America for Mining at Nyrstar, who says the mine’s infrastructure needs an overhaul.

Bill Garton is the President of Unifor Local 3019 representing Myra Falls mine workers and he agrees the operation needs to be upgraded…

Garton says both the union, and the company are in the same boat on this one!

Both the union and company are hoping to re-start mining operations in about six months time.
