Campbellton torn over proposed ‘entertainment venue’

The owner of Campbell River’s Voodoo Lounge has requested the transfer of a liquor licence from the Ironwood Rd. location to a new location at 1620 Island Hwy.

The site, formally home to Acklands-Granger, is two doors down from the old Quinsam Hotel property.

Residents and business owners in Campbellton are divided over a proposed ‘entertainment venue’ opening in the neighbourhood.

“It’s split, quite frankly,” says Brian Shaw, chair of Campbellton Neighbourhood Association. “There is a good number of residents who are looking to have the action stopped, and a good number of businesses, as a matter of fact, all businesses I’ve spoken too, have been pro-opening the business.”

At last night’s annual Campbellton Neighbourhood Association general meeting, a spokesperson for the proposed venue addressed those in attendance, stating the venue would fit up to 600 guests and will feature live performances.

The spokesperson says the venue has the goal of enhancing the neighbourhood and performances will only occur on Friday and Saturday nights, with occasional Thursdays.

He acknowledged that communication with the community could have been better, as even the City’s own notice to nearby residents says “The applicant is proposing to utilize the Liquor Primary Licence to operate a live music night club, karaoke and comedy venue.”

Campbellton resident Jordan Elwood attended the meeting as well and shared his concerns over the new venue.

An opposing petition has been put together by Elwood and he plans to present it to Campbell River city council today.

“The city council’s agenda is whether the license should be allowed to transfer from the Voodoo location over to the Campbellton location. Their recommendation is what’s required by the business to go to the B.C. Government for approval of the liquor license change,” Shaw adds.

Council will consider endorsing the liquor license application at its regularly scheduled Monday meeting.
