Protesters are once again showing their support for Wet’suwet’en opposition to a pipeline.
This time, they’re in downtown Campbell River.
They’ve filled the sidewalks in front of North Island MLA and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena’s office.
The group is bringing awareness to the issues happening in northern British Columbia.
Protester Mandy Vaughan says she’s “really unhappy with the government subsidizing the Coastal GasLink by billions of dollars to build the LNG pipeline and facility. We should be moving away from fossil fuels, instead, we’re subsidizing fossil fuels to trample on Indigenous rights. That’s wrong anywhere you cut it.”
Meanwhile, protester Susan Westren says many concerns are not being taken into account.
“The UN Committee on the elimination of racial discrimination urged Canada to halt construction on the gas link pipeline, the Site C Dam and on the TMX. That’s clearly not happening. The Hereditary Chiefs offered several alternative pipeline routes and they were turned down.”
This protest comes after a separate rally on Monday saw protesters blockade part of the Inland Island Highway at Exit 117.
Organizers have not said how long they plan to be in front of Trevena’s office.
