Trails remain open in Campbell River, proper physical distancing encouraged

The City of Campbell River is sending out a reminder for safe use of trails and greenspace in town.

With COVID-19 keeping people away from work and school, the city says that the “pleasant spring weather is calling us outdoors.”

In line with provincial public health orders, it’s closed parks with playgrounds, sports fields and courts, the off-leash dog park and all park furniture like benches and picnic tables.

This is to help reduce gatherings and access to activities and equipment with frequently touched surfaces that can help to spread the virus.

What kind of outdoor activities are allowed?

  • If you’re not required to stay home due to illness or potential exposure to the virus, you can still go outside for walks and bike rides
  • Pathways like the Seawalk, Dick Murphy Park walkway and trails on Baikie Island can still be used while practicing the proper physical distancing

If you go for a walk, you’re asked to stay close to home while keeping away from public spaces as much as possible.

“It is heartening to know that most people are doing the right thing, both at work and in their personal lives, and this must continue,” says Mayor Andy Adams. “The Provincial Health Officer has been clear that following the directives will make the crucial difference in keeping each other safe, and we must remain vigilant. We must keep up our efforts and all do our part to limit the impact of this virus.”

In line with public health orders, most public washrooms in town are closed at this time to limit the resources available to manage these facilities.

Washrooms and drinking water are available near Spirit Square.

“We know people miss getting together and socializing, but now is not the time for hanging out with groups of friends or holding parties because these greatly increase the risk of spreading the virus. Please be patient and hold off for now. We will have so much to celebrate once we get through this,” the Mayor adds.
