A Courtenay woman is paying homage to those on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kris Hopping has turned her fence at First Street and Cliffe Avenue into a “Hero Wall.”
It’s to honour workers ranging from nurses, to trash collectors, to grocery store employees.
She says it’s about recognizing the sacrifices of essential workers.
“They do an amazing job and it’s a dangerous job and they really do need credit for it,” Hopping said. “I have lots of friends that are doing it, and I want to give them credit, somehow.”
You can write the names of your heroes on two pieces of plywood that she fastened side-by-side on the fence.
“(They’re) painted white with lettering and a whole whack of hearts,” she said.

There’s a spot on one of the walls that will feature a new group of workers every day.
“So that’s going to be for groups of people like bus drivers, and grocery store employees, and city workers, that sort of thing,” she said.
Hopping’s mom passed away on Friday night so the hero wall is a tribute to her, too.
“I started the panels on Saturday,” she said. “I felt like I was honouring her at the same time and it gave me something to focus on to get out of my own head a little bit. My mom’s caregivers’ names are on that wall, too.”
