Volunteer Campbell River offering peer support program for seniors

The Volunteer Campbell River Society wants to brighten a seniors day.

It’s offering free, confidential, one-to-one support to both women and men aged 55 and up through its Senior Peer Support Program.

“Seniors experiencing social isolation are more likely to experience loneliness or other emotional distress,” the society says. “We want to connect seniors who would benefit from a friendly phone call visit with carefully screened volunteers who want to help.”

The program is aimed at those facing loneliness, stress, anxiety, isolation, depression, relocation, lifestyle changes, bereavement, retirement, ageing and health concerns.

The goal is to provide encouragement while helping to manage concerns and worries.

It also wants to help seniors find and utilize available supports and resources, feel connected to their community and provide them with meaningful activities.

A group of support volunteers are trained to listen, respect the need for privacy and confidentiality, respect personal choice and assist seniors with finding accurate information.

Referrals to the Senior Peer Support Program can be by self-referral, friends or family, community services and medical professionals.
