UPDATED: More than 85 displaced following apartment fire in Campbell River

Over 85 people have been evacuated from their homes following a fire at Pacific West Apartments.

The Campbell River Fire Department responded to the structure fire at the corner of Dogwood Street and 9th Avenue at 4:23am this morning.

Crews battled the blaze in a unit on the second floor that extended up to the third floor.

Four people were rescued from the building, which included one from a second-floor balcony, one from the fourth floor and two on the main floor.

The remaining occupants were able to escape and are in the care of ESS.

Fire Chief Thomas Doherty says as conditions quickly changed, crews were forced to transition to an exterior fire attack.

He adds that “two firefighters were injured when the floor on the third level collapsed. The firefighters fell through to the floor below. Fortunately, they were able to escape with minor injuries.”

This cause of the fire is under investigation.
