Strathcona Dam gate maintenance will cause road closure in June

BC Hydro’s annual spillway gate maintenance work gets underway next week at Strathcona Dam.

Spokesman Stephen Watson said this will ensure three gates are reliable during large storm events in the fall and winter and during flood risk management operations.

To complete the work, the road across the dam will be closed from 8:00am to 5:00pm from June 3rd to 5th, 8th to 12th, and 15th to 19th.

During those times, you’re asked to use alternative routes. If travelling before 8:00am or after 5:00pm during the week, or on weekends, access across the dam will be open.

Meanwhile, the planned re-opening of the Strathcona Dam Campground is set for June 1st with 11 formal campsites, but the overflow area will remain closed to maintain proper physical distancing with COVID-19.

During the road closure across the dam, campers will be unable to access the campground from Highway 28 on the south side of the watershed.

Campers will need to use access roads from the north side of the watershed up either Merrill Lake Road or Lower Campbell Lake Road, which then both connect to Greenstone Road and on to the Strathcona Dam and the campsite.
