Campbell River’s Canada Day bash is now officially online.
The city’s Canada Day Committee, led by chair Carol Chapman, launched a website today to support this year’s virtual celebration.
The committee is asking you to decorate your home, vehicle, business, and even yourself in Canada Day colours and take photos and/or videos of everything or everyone that has been decorated and upload them here.
These will all be compiled into a virtual video celebration parade to be broadcast July 1st on Shaw Spotlight, Facebook, YouTube as well as on the website.
Chapman said the committee is very excited to be able to create a virtual Canada Day.
“For the last 20 years, the City of Campbell River has been able to present Canada Day in a very big fashion and when they said all gatherings had to be cancelled, I thought, ‘No, I’m not going to cancel it, I’m going to make it work,” she said.
“We built a team of all of the collective people in the community – we have the Willow Point BIA, the downtown BIA, Campbellton BIA, Chamber of Commerce, City of Campbell River, and all of the amazing, supportive businesses that have jumped on board to help us out.”
Creating a virtual Canada Day has been a lot of work but also a lot of fun, Chapman said: “We have a lot of time on our hands with the lockdown and we all worked together collectively because every one of our committee members all has a huge commitment to (the) community. So it was a lot of work and a lot of learning curves because none of us have ever done this before.”
Chapman said she is proud of the community, province, and country for being able to bring Canada Day to the world in a virtual form.
“This will be seen all across Canada, and it’s all of the players that have made it happen because we are so proud of Canada and the job that they’ve done fighting COVID, we celebrate that even more. It takes a village and we’ve proven with this beautiful city of Campbell River and all of the folks who have been there to support Canada Day in the past and in the future, and we thank everyone so much for that.”
The deadline for photo and video submissions is June 14.
Submission categories include:
KidsFest — Perform a trick, tell a joke, show off your chalk-art … get creative and send in your photo or video to be a part of the show.
Rotary Parade — Decorate your home, your car, your boat, your bike or yourself with Canada Day colours and submit your ‘float.’ Your photos or video will be part of Campbell River’s virtual Canada Day celebration.
Huck Finn Fishing Derby — Send photos or a video of your favourite/best fishing trip; tell your greatest fishing story in the comments section of the form.
Talent Show — Sing, dance, act, cook, build – whatever your talent, this is an opportunity to put it on display.
Pancake Breakfast — Make pancakes and show them off to the city.
