Black Lives Matter silent protest set for Saturday in Campbell River

There’s a silent protest in support of the Black Lives Matter movement planned for Campbell River on Saturday.

It’s kicking off at 11:00am in Spirit Square.

Event organizer Taylor Ellis says it’ll take place rain or shine with no set end time.

“I plan on staying until everyone’s gone,” Ellis says. “Come and go when you’re comfortable.”

Ellis feels as though now is the best time to bring awareness to an issue she says has been going on for far too long.

On May 25th, George Floyd, an unarmed black man, was killed at the hands of a former Minneapolis police officer.

This has prompted protests and riots across the United States and around the world.

“It’s just really bad,” Ellis says. “Police brutality against minorities, especially black people, has been going on for quite some time.”

A post on the protests Facebook event page, ‘silent protest for blm movement,’ says “Canada is not innocent.”

“We are having a silent protest because we will stay silent as long as they are being silenced.”

You’re asked to bring your own sign, if possible.

But if you don’t have time to make one, Ellis says organizers will be bringing some extra ones.

She’s also encouraging you to bring a candle that you can light “in memory of all the lives lost due to police brutality.”

Physical distancing protocols will be in place at the silent protest as well, with each participant asked to wear a mask.

If it’s sunny, Ellis says organizers plan to draw chalk circles to help keep people two metres apart.
