Campbell River RCMP in full support of Black Lives Matter silent protest

The Campbell River RCMP says it’s in full support of tomorrow’s silent protest against racism.

In a statement, the RCMP says the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man killed at the hands of a former Minneapolis police officer, “has sparked a torrent of emotions for so many.”

“Protests, rallies, and sadly, riots have occurred not only in America, but around the world,” the statement says.

Campbell River’s protest will kick off at 11:00am in Spirit Square.

While acknowledging racism is alive in Canada, Inspector Jeff Preston says the RCMP will not condone discriminating behaviour.

“We do not tolerate bullying of any kind, period. This is the time to show compassion and empathy for one another and not hatred,” Preston says.

He adds it’s important to recognize that as a group, local police strive to better serve everyone in the community no matter their race, gender, faith, or sexual orientation.

“We will continue to support the people in the city we call home in the most positive way we can.”
