Campbell River one of a small number of school districts in B.C. to offer summer school

Despite the interruption in learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were a lot fewer students in summer school in Campbell River.

SD72 says it was one of a small number of districts in British Columbia to offer summer school this year.

Sean Mclaughlin, one of the two summer school principals, said that 482 students were enrolled in summer school this past July, a drop when compared to approximately 800 students last year.

Programming was offered at four schools, including École Phoenix Elementary, Cedar Elementary, Robron Centre and Penfield Elementary.

“Summer school followed health and safety protocols and many of the courses took place outside, taking advantage of the weather, our location and opportunities for outside learning,” SD72 says.

It found elementary offerings, middle school prep and Math 9 to be the more popular courses.

With class sizes limited under the Stage 3 provincial framework in effect at the time, SD72 says summer school finished the year with a small deficit of $7,679.

However, the district adds feedback was that families were appreciative of the opportunity for their children to finish the year on a positive educational note and to safely connect with friends.
