Demolition begins for Campbell River apartment complex gutted by fire

Time to say goodbye to Campbell River’s Pacific Heights apartment complex.

It’s finally being torn down after it caught fire back in April and left dozens of people without a home.

Crews began tearing down the building at the corner of Dogwood Street and 9th Avenue yesterday and are continuing with the demolition work today.

Several new affordable and supportive housing units are now planned for the nearby area, as city council recently approved a new complex next door.

It will offer what it calls “affordable market rates,” and Mayor Andy Adams says the five-storey, 79 unit building will be constructed by a private developer in partnership with BC Housing.

A few blocks south, construction has begun on the city’s new supportive housing project at 580 Dogwood Street.

Those homes will be available as a long-term, rental option for people experiencing or at-risk of homelessness. The Vancouver Island Mental Health Society will manage the property.
