Foundation seeks youth artwork to fill the walls of Campbell River’s new ‘home away from home’ for expectant mothers

With Campbell River’s new “home away from home” taking shape, the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island is now looking to get a head start on the finishing touches.

The 10-bedroom Q̓ʷalayu House, set to open this spring, will offer a place for North Island families and expectant mothers to stay as they access the nearby Campbell River Hospital and other health care services around town.

In an effort to add a pop of colour to the walls, the foundation is holding a themed art show that will give amateur artists aged 6 to 18 the opportunity to have their artwork displayed throughout the house.

It’s encouraging children and youth in communities on Vancouver Island and the surrounding islands to get involved, with the deadline to do so set for February 28th.

Artwork can be submitted by filling out the virtual art show entry form.

Meanwhile, Q̓ʷalayu House continues to come together, one beam at a time. It’s a first of its kind project in Campbell River, with inspiration stemming from Victoria’s “home away from home,” Jeneece Place.

According to the foundation, up to ten families can be accommodated at any given time in the “spacious rooms with en suite washroom facilities.”

The house will see a total of four family lounges and gathering spaces, the foundation says, adding that these spaces will be used for families to connect, relax, and restore as they alleviate emotional and financial stress.
