City invites you to join in on ‘Covid-Conscious’ programs at local parks, trails

The City of Campbell River is helping you take the hard work out of working out.

The Recreation & Culture Department is offering two outdoor exercise walking programs over the next few months, ‘Walkie Talkies’ and ‘Umbrella Adventures.’

On Monday afternoons, the ‘Walkie Talkies’ take accessible routes with an educational edge, exploring trails and paths around town. Then, on Wednesday mornings, ‘Umbrella Adventures’ venture deeper into the forest.

Both walking programs take advantage of the natural beauty of the community and surrounding areas.

“Being in nature is a natural stress reliever, it increases energy, and decreases anxiety and depression,” says recreation and culture programmer Karen Chappell.

“Walking with friends, or making new friends as you walk, is a great way to take the hard work out of working out,” Chappell adds. “On days when you don’t feel like exercise, and might skip if it was just you, the idea that you’re going to catch up with a walking buddy or explore a new part of the city may help get you out and moving.”

The recreation department provides umbrellas that help keep participants at least two metres apart, and the program follows all provincial public health safety protocols.

“It was so great to discover this group, I was out walking regularly but this opens up so many places I was nervous to go alone,” says Marilyn, a regular participant.

To take part in either of the two programs, the City is encouraging you to register online here. You can also call (250) 923-7911, or (250) 286-1161.
