Mayor says COVID immunizations progressing well at community centre

Campbell River’s mayor and city manager say the local COVID-19 vaccination clinic is running smoothly.

Mayor Andy Adams says it’s “fantastic” to see the program progressing as well and quickly as it is at the Campbell River Community Centre.

“Already this past week, we had nearly 10 percent of the adult population in (the) Island Health region vaccinated,” Adams said.

“We are well ahead of schedule and on track to have everyone in B.C. who is eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine receive the first dose before Canada Day, July 1st.”

Adams is urging all eligible adults in Campbell River to get immunized: “It’s safe, it’s effective, it’s simple, and they’re saving lives. The more people in our community who are immunized, the harder it is for the virus to spread.”

City manager Deborah Sargent said when the vaccine is available for your age group, you can book your appointment by calling 1-833-348-4787.

“(However), please do not call this number for information or other questions about the vaccine,” she said.

Adams says until we all have immunity, it’s vital to follow the rules including washing your hands, wearing masks, minimizing non-essential travel and avoiding large groups of people.

He added that even though some COVID-19 restrictions have eased somewhat, now is not the time to let your guard down.

“Provincial health orders now allow gathering outdoors of up to 10 people, indoor gatherings are still not permitted, but kids can have outdoor play dates… which is great news with spring break and the Easter long weekend coming up,  but we certainly don’t want a Palm Beach situation here in Campbell River,” he said.
