Pier Street Farmers Market returns to Cedar Street this May

It’s that time of year… the Pier Street Farmers Market is set to return to Campbell River next month.

It will be held on Sundays – starting May 2nd through to September 26th – from 10:00 am till 1:30 pm, giving attendees the chance to shop around and support local farmers and businesses.

However, with the pandemic ongoing, the market will once again be held at its alternative location on Cedar Street across from the Community Centre.

Given current public health orders, the City-owned site at 540 10th Avenue offered more space for vendors last year, so organizers will be utilizing the space again this summer. Usually, the market is held at the Maritime Heritage Centre.

Despite the location change, last year’s market was a big success: Just over 8,300 people attended in 2020, with an average of 693 per day, and 37 unique vendors in total.

The majority of the vendors over the years have been artisans, but these types of vendors weren’t permitted by BCCDC guidelines at markets in 2020.

But things are looking up: the Province announced on March 19th non-food vendors could return to farmers’ markets. This means the Pier Street Farmers Market is now looking for a full slate of vendors for the entirety of the 2021 season.

“We’re looking forward to the Covid-conscious farmers market,” Mayor Andy Adams adds. “As you know, last year the Pier Street Market was relocated up to Cedar Street to be able to follow the provincial health protocols of distancing and safety.”

“The Pier Street Association has agreed that it will continue in that location for this year,” he says. “We’re working with them and the Downtown BIA to make that happen.”
