Campbell River police dog Gator stops shoplifter from fleeing

It looks like theft is highlighting this week’s community update from the Campbell River RCMP.

The first case involves a break and enter at FYI Doctors on Dogwood Street. Police were called to the store at around 4:00 am last Wednesday (April 21st); they arrived to find the glass front door smashed in, and several pairs of Maui Jim sunglasses stolen.

“The incident apparently occurred at 3:40 am, but due to a communication relay issue, police were not notified until 20 minutes later,” Cst. Maury Tyre explains.

“At this point in time, there is very little to go on. We are hoping that someone from the public may have witnessed something or has been offered an unbelievable price on Maui Jim sunglasses. If anyone from the public has any information, we’d ask that they contact the local police detachment.”

A few days later – just before 11:00 Friday night (April 23rd) – police responded to a robbery report at the local Walmart.

Cst. Tyre says a man was confronted about shoplifting by the store’s loss prevention officer. The thief then threatened the officer with a knife, before taking off with the stolen goods.

“Police service dog Gator was called into action and the male, who was known to police, was located a short distance away and taken into custody without further incident,” Tyre adds.
