Fire safety self-inspection guides available for local businesses

The Campbell River Fire Department has developed a self-inspection fire safety program for people and businesses.

This comes with the recent increase in commercial property fires and the challenges of doing fire inspections with COVID-19 safety protocols.

The self-inspection guides include step by step checklists for fire safety code requirements, as well as fire safety information for each occupancy type and requirements to comply with the BC Fire Code.

Fire chief Thomas Doherty says that while they’re still doing inspections, this new tool will help people prepare their properties to be safe from fire.

“We’re introducing this program to enhance fire and life safety and to help people be proactive and better prepared to be in compliance with fire safety requirements when their scheduled fire inspection occurs. “

Specialized checklists for a range of businesses include:

  • Retail
  •  Care facilities and daycares
  • Multi-family residential buildings

They’re being emailed to business improvement associations, and to everyone with a City of Campbell River business licence.

The information is also available on the City’s website (www.campbellriver.ca/fire-inspections).
