City bringing concerts to local neighbourhoods this summer

Sometimes a little music therapy can go a long way — especially in the midst of a pandemic, with concerts on pause.

But the City of Campbell River is once again offering a unique alternative, bringing concerts to a select few areas around town this July and August.

Downtown’s Spirit Square usually doubles as a music venue. But this year, with COVID ongoing, the City’s concert series is hitting the road.

Just like last summer, ‘Spirit Square on the Move’ is bringing physically distanced concerts to residential neighbourhoods. According to the City, four concerts will take place at locations selected by random draw.

They’re allowing individual households to enter their neighbourhood in the draw, with the concert available to all homes in the immediate area of the winning residence.

One of the City’s recreation programmers, Karen Chappell, says it’s designed to be “a smaller outdoor concert series with limited and controlled capacity.”

“These street-based concerts will allow people to listen and enjoy safely from their front yards, on patios, porches or decks, while participating in a family-friendly, community-based event with their immediate neighbours,” she says.

Mayor Andy Adams finds locals are “really missing” Spirit Square concerts and other community events. But he notes live music from the safety and comfort of home will offer a way to reconnect with each other.

Concerts kick off at around 5:00 pm on July 15th and 24th, and August 5th and 14th. The City’s Rec and Culture Department will close the local street and fully manage each live music event.

Locals are urged to enter the draw by July 2nd, keeping in mind there’s a limit of one entry per household. The application form can be found here.
