SD72 ‘Grad Car Cruise’ set for June 26th

High school grads are marking a big milestone, cruising the streets of Campbell River to celebrate.

On June 26th (Saturday) starting at 11:00 am, School District 72 says grads from Carihi, Timberline, Robron, and the Campbell River Christian School will be participating in a ‘Grad Car Cruise’.

“If the route travels by your house we hope you will come out, or find another safe spot to cheer from, to show support for the Class of 2021,” SD72 says.

With the pandemic ongoing and restrictions in place, Superintendent Jeremy Morrow noted traditional graduation ceremonies won’t take place this year.

“They’ll be much more similar to how they looked last year,” Morrow said during SD72’s May 25th board meeting. “Each school in our district will be communicating with their families around those specifics.”

During the meeting, he explained that car parades offer a “real opportunity for wide-community participation.” The district set up a car cruise last June too.

“Last year – not just as the Superintendent, but as a parent of a graduate… to have that community support, lining the parade route was quite meaningful for our students,” Morrow added.

And perhaps next year there can be a return to the way families and schools used to recognize “this important milestone in the lives of our young men and women,” said school board chair, Ron Kerr.
