Catalytic converter theft on the rise in Campbell River

While a relatively new crime to town, the Campbell River RCMP says catalytic converter theft is on the rise, with four stolen from vehicles in as many days.

Catalytic converters help clean exhaust emissions through chemical reactions with precious metals. According to police, they can range in value from $400 to $3000, with the metals inside, like palladium, of high value to metal dealers.

Local thieves were recently caught on cam working as a pair, with one on the lookout and the other hopping under a vehicle with a battery-operated grinder in hand. “The catalytic converter was taken in under two minutes,” Cst. Maury Tyre says.

He continues, “Protecting yourself from these kinds of thefts is a difficult proposition. There are, however, some things people can do to reduce the risk of theft.” Tyre’s now urging drivers to park in a well-lit area within the range of a video camera, if possible. As well, he says etching a license plate number into the item is a good idea, as it could help police ID a thief.

Locals who spot someone walking around at night carrying tools or a catalytic converter are asked to call the Campbell River RCMP right away at (250) 286-6221.
