Big Truck Parade cruises into Campbell River Dec. 3

Mark your calendar, another Campbell River holiday tradition is returning. The Downtown BIA is gearing up for the 2021 Big Truck Parade.

It’s set for Friday, Dec. 3.

At 5 pm, fifty or so trucks decorated in lights will start cruising the Island Highway, from just north of Willow Point to Tyee Plaza.

And just like in past years, locals are invited to come out and watch.

“It’s going to be great. We’re very excited,” BIA co-chair Heather Gordon Murphy tells My Campbell River Now.

“I think we’ve got some drivers on the waiting list. Absolutely we are full and ready to go.”

She says organizers are eager to bring the event back to its normal form. Last year, it was held in a virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We got the go ahead. We put together a huge proposal to get all the ticks,” explains Gordon Murphy. “It’s okay in these crazy times right now.”

However, she notes some modifications due to new protocols, with event-goers encouraged to distance themselves and wear masks when needed.

There won’t be any photos with Santa, but entertainment will abound, including carolers, illuminated angels on stilts, and the lighting of the ‘Big Tree’.

As well, Starlight Shopping is back, encouraging people to shop local with stores open later than usual.

“The activities happen kind of all spread out around our core downtown area. Lots and lots of stores signed on to hand out cocoa,” Gordon Murphy says.

“Everything is outside, although people are encouraged to obviously shop inside. I imagine there will be certain rules and regulations like masks and only a certain number of people in shops.”

Leading up to the ‘big’ day, BIA executive director Jan Wade is being recognized for her hard work in putting on the parade since its inception. “She has an amazing team and puts it all together,” Gordon Murphy adds.
