Gashes, punctures, blood loss: Dog attack sends Campbell River woman to hospital

A dog attack has left one Campbell River woman recovering from multiple large gashes, punctures and blood loss.

On Nov. 12 around noon, local RCMP were called to a “known residence” in Stories Beach, just south of town.

Once on scene, Cst. Maury Tyre says officers found a 50-year-old man outside covered in blood, with his 50-year-old wife inside suffering injuries caused by the family Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Officers performed first aid on the woman to stem the flow of blood until paramedics arrived, explains Tyre. He says the victim was then taken to hospital where she remained as of Friday (Nov. 19).

“Incidents such as this are a grim reminder that police do not just exist as an investigative body, but also as the first responder to dangerous situations so that life-saving first aid can be rendered,” Tyre says.

He adds that first aid was also performed on the man, who sustained arm wounds while trying to get the dog to release his wife.

According to police, the dog was allegedly injured by the owner during the incident and was removed from the home by Animal Control Services.
