Campbell River wakes up to icy roads: ‘Slow down and take care’

The Comox Valley, Campbell River and surrounding communities are now dealing with the aftermath of this week’s snowstorm.

Recent rain showers have turned the snow to ice, prompting a slew of warnings for local drivers to slow down and use extra caution behind the wheel.

“The conditions are extremely icy, and it’s extremely important to slow down and take care,” said RCMP Cst. Maury Tyre, in a Facebook video posted around 5 this morning (Dec. 8).

Tyre’s plea came following an early morning crash that left the Old Island Hwy. fully closed at York Rd., about 5 km south of Campbell River.

Meanwhile, in Courtenay, thousands are currently without power in the downtown and Ryan Rd. areas, near the Superstore.

It went out just before 8:10 am, and BC Hydro says a ‘vehicle incident’ is to blame. However, crews are assigned to get the power restored.

According to reports, a pickup truck hit a hydro pole and split it in two, with one side of Ryan Rd. closed entirely. Fire crews are also on site.

“Please be careful. I just put my car in a ditch, and I grew up in Winnipeg,” states a post to the Facebook group, Comox Valley Rant & Raves.

“Drive safe out there, people! It’s a skating rink!” another local wrote.
