Friday fire ravages Merville home: ‘There was nothing we could do’

A Friday morning blaze has left a house on Winn Rd. in Merville completely destroyed, according to Oyster River Fire Rescue.

Deputy fire chief Martin Thomas says crews were called to the fire south of Campbell River at around 6:30 am today, Jan. 14.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find the house’s driveway “inaccessible” due to snow, making things all the more difficult.

“We had to hike in, and the house was fully involved,” Thomas told Vista Radio.

“There was nothing we could do. The house is gone, unfortunately.”

Luckily, Thomas says the elderly couple who resided there made it out okay, with no injuries reported.

“There’s a crew on scene right now; they’re just dumping down,” he noted. “We’ll probably do an investigation tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Thomas adds that it was a busy morning, with two car crashes and a chimney fire keeping crews on their feet.

On Jan. 8, following a plethora of snowfall, Oyster River Fire reminded those with a fire hydrant near their house to clear it of snow “to allow quick access if it is needed.”
