Closures abound for road across John Hart Dam next week

Local drivers should note that Brewster Lake Rd., the road across the John Hart Dam, will be closed for two days next week.

BC Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson says the closure is set for Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 26 and 27, from 8:30 am to 4 pm.

He says it’s needed so crews can safely conduct site reviews for the upcoming dam seismic upgrade project.

“Please use the Highway 19 alternative route if you need to travel during that time. Road closure signage will be posted on either side of the dam in advance,” Watson said.

“We are planning to begin the John Hart Dam project site preparation works, such as tree clearing for the laydown areas, later this year,” he added.

“The main project construction work is planned to begin in summer 2023 and last for about six years. During the six years of construction work, the road across the dam will be closed.”

In the meantime, drivers heading north should brace for some delays on Highway 19, according to Mainroad North Island.

The road maintenance company says crews are busy cutting dangerous trees along the highway near Woss until Friday, Jan. 21, between 8 am and 5 pm.

Single-lane alternating traffic is in effect, with up to 30-minute delays between the Sayward to Mount Cain junctions.
