Fire restrictions will be in place after 12 p.m. Thursday in the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and the City of Campbell River.
The city and district made their announcements after BC Wildfire Service implemented restrictions in the Coastal Fire Centre Wednesday.
The CVRD says they will be implementing the same campfire ban along with a smoking ban in all their parks.
The following CVRD fire departments are involved in the campfire ban:
- Comox Fire Rescue
- Courtenay Fire Department
- Cumberland Fire Rescue
- Denman Island Fire Rescue
- Fanny Bay Volunteer Fire Department
- Hornby Island Fire Rescue
- Oyster River Fire Rescue
- Ships Point Volunteer Fire Department
- Union Bay Fire Rescue
Campbell River says the ban will apply to all recreational fires, backyard fires and beach fires within the city, along with burning barrels, sky lanterns, torches and fireworks.
“The city’s top priority is public and community safety, and while we appreciate people’s love of recreational fires, the risk is too great at this point in the summer,” said acting fire chief Kelly Bellefleur. “We would like to thank everyone for doing their part to prevent fires in and around our community and for following the fire ban to help keep ourselves, our families and our community safe.”
The ban does not apply for gas, propane or briquette cooking stoves, portable campfire devices that use briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel.
They add the devices must be CSA or ULC approved and the flame can’t be more than 15 centimetres high.
