Homeowners safely escape fire in Willow Point

The owners of a home in the Willow Point area of Campbell River are safe following a structure fire Friday.

Campbell River fire chief Dan Verdun says crews got calls about the fire on Parkway Road just after 11 a.m.

Verdun says they had about 25 firefighters working to get the fire under control, and crews are still on the scene mopping up while an investigator figures out the cause.

He adds the homes next to the fire were untouched in the ordeal.

Local resident and witness Greg Enns says the fire was large and they were concerned about the homeowners and other houses.

“My neighbour phoned me and goes ‘is my house on fire? Somebody just phoned about a house fire’,” said Enns. “I could see the smoke, so I went out, and it was a pretty intense fire.”

Verdun hopes the owners will be able to salvage some of their belongings inside the home. He adds the homeowners did what they should have done in the situation, and were only transported by ambulance as a precaution.

“They reported the fire, they got out of the house immediately, they called 911 and got us in action,” said Verdun.

“It’s a great safety message that if you do unfortunately have a fire, the faster you get out of that house, the faster you call us, the faster we can get there and start doing our work.”
