Winter storm warning prompts opening of warming centre

A warming centre will be open at the Campbell River Community Centre tonight with a winter storm warning in effect.

The space is being opened by the City of Campbell River and the Coalition to End Homelessness. The centre will open at 10 p.m. and stay open until 7 a.m. tomorrow.

The city says it will be staffed by individuals with experience working with people experiencing homelessness. Funding is being provided by Emergency Management BC and the city.

“Thank you to the Coalition to End Homelessness and the many staff and volunteers who make warming centre activations possible,” said the city in a statement.

A new space is set to open at the Harbourside Inn on Shoppers Row in the coming days. The city says it will provide dedicated services for the unhoused population, and a warming centre will not be offered at the Community Centre afterwards.
