Residents home after evacuation order lifted

Residents of 738 Island Highway South are back at home after an evacuation order was lifted by the City of Campbell River.

The evacuation order for the condo building came into effect last week, following a landslide behind the building that damaged a parkade. The city says, however, that evacuation alerts and a state of local emergency are still in place.

A clean-up operation took place before the residents could return and debris was removed from the site. The order was lifted on Saturday. Geotechnical engineers are working with the city to investigate the slide.

Director of operations Drew Hadfield thanks the residents for their patience while waiting to go home.

“Thank you to the residents of the affected buildings for their patience and cooperation as the city completed the necessary work to ensure it was safe to return to the site. We are extremely glad that residents were able to return to their homes over the weekend,” said Hadfield.

“I’d also like to thank the supporting agencies, staff and volunteers for their incredible efforts to make the return happen as efficiently as possible.”

More updates from the city will be provided on the city’s website as the investigation continues.
