BC Hydro will issue public safety notice on Elk Falls Canyon next week

BC Hydro plans some higher water flows at Elk Falls Canyon in Campbell River.

There are water releases planned for the John Hart Dam next week on Wednesday and Thursday, and they will continue every Wednesday and Thursday till March 23rd.

The utility says it will provide five, two-day duration, steelhead migration, and spawning flows down Elk Falls Canyon to help fish access good habitat from the tunnel area to the base of Elk Falls.

A public river safety advisory will be in place from below the outlet of the dam to the canyons, where out of consideration, BC Hydro will start increasing the water discharges at the dam each Tuesday night.

They ask everyone to stay away from Elk Falls Canyon, especially immediately upstream of Elk Falls, during the increased flows.

Meanwhile, the water supply forecast for the February to September period shows inflows to be 90 percent normal.

BC Hydro adds that it is still early and much could change in the next few months depending on the weather.

The reservoir water level in the Campbell River watershed is generally where it should be at this time of the year, according to BC Hydro.
