The City of Campbell River will officially expand its municipal organics curbside collection program, starting next month.
Through collaboration with Comox Strathcona Waste Management and neighboring communities, the goal of this expansion is to reduce the amount of food waste that normally ends up in landfills, extending its lifespan.
Drew Hadfield, Director of Operations for the City says the City encourages residents to prep all of their food waste for pick-up, as part of the program.
“A comprehensive list of food and yard items that are accepted for curbside collection can be found on the City’s website alongside all the program information residents may need,” says Hadfield.
The City says residents should first collect kitchen waste using either a green kitchen bin or another container, transfer the bin into a dedicated curbside organics bin, attach an organics waste program sticker to it, before placing it on the curb on the morning of collection day.
While yard and organic waste may be in the same bin as kitchen waste, any organic waste must be in a sealed container to avoid wildlife conflicts, according to the City.
Those who are in municipal curbside collection can participate in the expanded service, starting on April 17th of this year.
