Hollywood writer’s strike casts uncertainty on Island productions

Summer plans for film and TV productions on Vancouver Island remain uncertain while the Hollywood writer’s strike continues.

More than a dozen productions have filmed on the Island already this year, with more TV shows and movies planned. The Vancouver Island South Film Commission says Island-based projects which already have finished scripts should be unaffected, along with Canadian productions and reality shows.

Meanwhile, local work continues. Last month the Island North Film Commission hired location scouts for six regional districts to document potential locations and put them in a database for producers around the world.

Members of the Writer’s Guild of America went on strike Tuesday; they say they aren’t getting a fair share of revenue from streaming services.
