MP presses fisheries minister for details of salmon farm transition plan

The MP for North Island-Powell River is asking the fisheries minister to reveal long- awaited plans for moving salmon farms on land.

Rachel Blaney wrote a letter May 1 to Minister Joyce Murray, pointing out there has been no plan announced, despite government promises to develop one in 2019. She said workers are facing uncertainty and hardships, communities are being affected by economic losses, and that people in her riding deserve more support and consideration from the federal government.

Blaney called on the minister to use funds from the $647 million Pacific Salmon Strategy to help regions and communities which will be affected by the transition. She also suggested the minister acknowledge and work with the First Nations who have developed positive relationships with the industry.
