Four years in jail for man whose dangerous driving killed two tourists

A Campbell River man was sentenced yesterday to four years in jail for dangerous driving which left two American tourists dead.

Kyle Rodney O’Callaghan pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of Charlotte Van Valkenburg and her cousin Curtis Bartley. The incident happened on September 15, 2019, when O’Callaghan took his F150 pickup on to Highway 19 north of Campbell River.

He was driving at least 40 km/h over the speed limit in wet, slippery conditions when he lost control of his truck, and collided with the second of three vehicles driving in a caravan. The driver was killed instantly, and one of the passengers died after being removed from the car. Three other passengers were badly injured.

O’Callaghan’s sentence will be followed by a five-year driving ban.
