Quadra Island nation and Mosaic ink new logging deal

The We Wai Kai First Nation on Quadra Island has made a deal with timber company Mosaic to log parts of the island and nearby coastline.

The nation and Mosaic Forest Management have a two-year deal to harvest timber on the Island and in the Jackson Bay region on the mainland coast. Chief Ronnie Chickite says the agreement fits the nation’s vision for sustainable forest management in its territory.

Logging will be done by a First Nations-owned company, which employs 14 We Wai Kai band members.

Mosaic CEO Rob Gough says the agreement is a good example of the company’s efforts to increase indigenous participation in the forest economy.
