Officials came to Campbell River to break ground on the new hospital

Construction on the new $274.5 million hospital coming to Campbell River has started and an official ground breaking ceremony was held Thursday.

One Campbell River doctor who has been involved in designing the new 95 bed facility expressed his excitement that it is all going ahead.

Jeff Besalt says they have been carefully designing the hospital to meet the needs of two specific groups.

Besalt says the hospital is also designed with input from local first nations and Métis partners. He says the facilities will be welcoming and allow for an exchange of knowledge and understanding of traditional beliefs.

BC’s Health Minister Terry Lake, was also in attendance, he says the project is not only good news for local health care but also for the economy, in job creation.

Lake says they can not guarantee local jobs but they are working to provide opportunities for local suppliers to have a chance to participate.
