Elders Conference 2019 | Through the Eyes of the Buffalo

Elders Conference 2019 | Through the Eyes of the Buffalo | Campbell River, BC

This is an opportunity to embrace all relations, honour and host our Elders throughout Vancouver Island and beyond! Highlights include engaging, cultural workshops and focus on Edibles, Medicinals, Harvesting/Gathering, Wellness, Beading Trade Show, Saturday Night Dinner & Cultural Fashion Show, traditional storytelling and off-site visits.

Conference cost includes Friday night light supper, Saturday & Sunday continential breakfast and buffet-style lunch and Gala Dinner on Saturday night ~ all hosted at the Robron Centre in Campbell River, British Columbia. Once you have registered, specific workshop information will be presented to you for your selection process.

Workshops are being confirmed and will include:

– Cree Heritage & Culture: With a focus on language and knowledge

– Edibles & Medicinals of Vancouver Island: taste and use pre-gathered specialties

– Community Quilt Building: Build, Decorate and Contribute your square to the Elders Quilt

– Elders Tea Party: Sip & Learn what natural teas you can make and how they benefit you

– Learning to Trust: Blanket Exercise and more

– To Your Beat: Make your own hide drum (additional cost per person $200 for supplies and facilitator)

– Michif: Learning the Basics of the Metis Language

– BCMNR Presentation: Harvesting & Gathering Info Session

– Smudging Ceremony: Learning to cleanse

– Maintaining Balance: Wellness Model Using Medicine Wheel

– Fit NATION: group exercise for all levels – adapted for those with constricted movement

– Healthy Eating: Cooking Demo with traditional elements

– Building Bridges Through Understanding the Village: exploring reconciliation and decolonization


“Through The Eyes of the Buffalo” Elders Gathering & Conference will start on Friday, February 15th with a
Beading Competition and workshops which are open to all peoples; Friday evening includes a welcoming circle
and traditional storytelling. Saturday and Sunday are filled with workshops from local and in-bound facilitators
and promises to be a very strong cultural and health engagement workshops. Currently, workshops are as
follows: Friday – Loom Beading / Applique Beading – Gillan Wall & NI Métis Beading Circle
Saturday and Sunday – Fit Nation – ISPARC / Maintaining Balance Using the Medicine Wheel – Susan Landell /
Cree Heritage & Culture – Daryle Mills / Building Bridges Through Understanding the Village (full day) – Kathi
Camilleri / Community Quilt: build your square – Melody Lang & Roberta Shepard / Drum Making – Jorge
Lewis ($200 additional fee for supplies) / Paint Your Drum: Traditional Art – Bud Logan / Healthy Eating &
Cooking Demo – Aboriginal Health / Elders Tea Party: local medicinal teas – June Johnson / Six Sacred
Grandfathers and One Sacred Grandma – Susan Landell … more workshops will be announced as registration
begins to fill.


The registration cost of the Conference is $60 per person (plus ticket fees); there are some workshops like
‘Drum Making with Jorge Lewis’ which have additional fees based on the supplies required. The registration
cost includes your meals at the conference over the weekend and approximately four workshops and ‘the Lil
Dinnay Buffet Dinner & Dance’ on the Saturday night featuring key note speaker, Coppermoon Singers,
Cultural Fashion Show and live music by the Goodman Boys. For those interested in attending the Saturday
night event and are not registered for the conference, they can purchase tickets for $15 per person.
