Contract negotiations at local casino break down

Contract negotiations between newly unionized Campbell River Chances Casino workers and their employer Playtime Community Gaming Centers have broken down.

Union representative Rick Wrangler, from United Steelworkers Local 1-1937, says they have been in talks since April, and the sticking points now are wages and the term of the agreement.

He says the union is going to hold a strike vote next Monday.

Playtime says in a written statement they are disappointing that the union feels this tactic is preferable to providing a more realistic proposal upon which the bargaining could continue.
“We had hoped that, after successfully reaching agreement on approximately 95% of the terms of the agreement, the parties’ positions on the final issues would have been closer than they are such that this agreement could be concluded quickly as was our history with our other unionized facilities,” adds the statement.
Playtime says they are bargaining in good faith towards an agreement that is fair and equitable for both the employees and the employer.
Both sides have made it clear they are willing to head back to the negotiating table.
