Spill at local mine

The Ministry of Environment is investigating after several thousand liters of an acidic substance spilled at the Myra Falls mine in Strathcona Park.

The ministry says, in a statement, a team has been on site and done water quality checks at Buttle Lake and Myra Creek.

Preliminary results from those checks show pH values meet water quality guidelines for aquatic health and there is no drinking water concern.

The Ministry also says the local Medical Health Officer has said the risk to human health is minimal.

The Mine’s parent company Nyrstar says the emergency response systems at Myra Falls detected the problem early and began remedial measures immediately.
